Thymalin is a thymus-derived polypeptide complex used in research involving immune regulation, thymic signaling, hematopoietic differentiation, and age-associated changes in immune function. Unlike a single synthetic peptide with one defined amino-acid sequence, Thymalin is described in the scientific literature as a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides isolated from calf thymus, with reported peptide components having molecular masses up to approximately 10 kDa.
Research on Thymalin has examined its effects on T-lymphocyte differentiation, hematopoietic stem-cell maturation, inflammatory signaling, and cytokine production. In human hematopoietic stem-cell experiments, Thymalin decreased expression of the stem/intermediate markers CD44 and CD117 while increasing expression of CD28, a marker associated with mature T lymphocytes. Other in-vitro work has reported modulation of inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, while research on peptide constituents isolated from Thymalin has also explored T-cell recognition, cyclic-nucleotide signaling, neutrophil chemotaxis, and phagocytosis. These findings describe experimental research contexts rather than human-use claims.
